I had been to Penang over the weekends and am now trying to write what I think of the hawker food over there.
The first is wan tan mee. This is the nicest presentation for a wan tan mee I get from a 'hawker' setting. It features 3 wantans, a few slices of char siew, some chicken meat, some vegetable, half a mushroom and viola, we have a really good looking and tasty wan tan mee. Seriously, This is the nicest wan tan mee I had tried, had bad experience with wan tan mee in Subang Jaya, but this plate of wan tan mee is recommended. Best of all, it only cost RM 2.50 for all the ingredients I mentioned.
This notice sure will made Quek feel pissed off. He will say, 'wtf? no drinks also charge me RM0.40?? i rather have a glass of chinese tea ice and it only cost me RM0.30!!!!'
This is a plate of chicken + fish porridge. Great value for money, really a lot a lot of fish sunken under the bowl. The you tiao also come at no extra charge. It only cost RM3, and it taste great too.
okay, this is really highly recommended. This is the best fried squid i ever tried. The chili sauce is just as nice. The squid is hot and springy!!! really, really nice!!!
beef ball noodles!!! the taste is not really great but it's acceptable. The cool thing is you get 6 beef balls and one taufu for only RM 3!!! again, this is value for money, but the mee is not much, not very filling.
This is from the same stall as the beef noodles, only it's dried version. The taste is worse than the soup one. It comes with one taufu and one spring roll, also RM 3.
Okay, due to time constrain, I haven't been able to eat other famous food like Penang laksa (tried one in other place, taste nasty, dun dare to try anymore, but hey, maybe it's the same story with the Subang Jaya wan tan mee.), Penang fried Kuey tiao, Penang prawn mee...etc. Maybe during my next visit I can write more about these.
For now, Penang hawker food give me the impression of tasty and value for money. However, most of them come in really small potion. Maybe they wan you to eat more so they can squeeze more money out of you. :)
